The Screening

At the High School Athlete Cardiac Screening Center of South Florida, we screen your child athlete, marching band member or cheerleader for HCM and two other conditions (congenital aortic valve stenosis and congenital long QT syndrome) that could affect his or her participation.

Screening is quick, uncomplicated and totally painless, and can be done in less than 15 minutes in the doctors’ office.

In general, an EKG (tracing of the electrical activity of the heart)combined with an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) and blood pressure reading allow the cardiologist to identify the presence of HCM.

Results of the tests are available immediately. If HCM is detected, the doctor will refer the athlete for further tests.
